Julius Smith Young III, LMBT NC License #17168 I found my way to a John F. Barnes' trained myofascial release therapist after many years of shoulder pain from a weight lifting strain and being unable to find a solution for my pain to go away. I had pain in day to day activities, such as throwing the football, baseball, or frisbee in our backyard with our kids. This pain went on for about ten years, I tried many different traditional therapies, and I was beginning to believe that I would have this pain for the rest of my life. After myofascial release treatment with a John Barnes trained myofascial release therapist, my pain went away. That was my aha moment that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life and began traveling across the country and training in John's method of myofascial release and started my own myofascial release practice. I began working out of our home and have recently completed construction of a detached office building beside our home with a beautiful view of our pasture and two horses.
I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill for college, Duke for graduate school, ECPI for information technology training, and the NC Massage School for massage therapy training. I have taken zillions of continuing education classes over my lifetime and am an avid learner. I have worked in IT, had an IT and ebay powerselling business, worked at the YMCA, attended an archaeology dig overseas, translated in numerous ancient languages, and even spent a few years taking classes and performing in improvisation, standup comedy, sketch comedy, community theater, and writing stage plays.
Later on in life, I decided to make a change and enrolled at the NC Massage School to become a massage therapist and trained in different healing modalities during and after massage therapy school that continued to open my awareness until finding my way to the John Barnes method of myofascial release. I wholeheartedly believe in John's method and now offer myofascial release sessions in a quiet office setting.
I have years of experience, wholeheartedly believe in the John F. Barnes, PT Myofascial Release method, and have completed over 482 hours of training in Myofascial Release I X 3, Myofascial Release II X 2, Myofascial Release III, Myofascial Unwinding X 2, Advanced Myofascial Unwinding X 2, Fascial-Pelvis X 3, Cervical-Thoracic, Fascial Cranium x 2, Pediatric Myofascial Release, Myofascial Mobilization X 2, Myofascial Rebounding X 2, Women's Health Seminar, Myofascial Healing Seminar, Therapy for the Therapist program, Skill Enhancement Seminar X 2, and seminar instructor assists.
In my spare time I enjoy hiking and camping with my family in North Carolina's Great Smoky Mountains; family trips to Walt Disney World, England, Madeira, and other travel destinations the US and overseas; attending Charlotte FC soccer games; playing vintage 1980's Colecovision, Atari 2600/7800, and Nintendo video games; and helping my family care for our retired American Saddlebred show horse, Callaways Ike the Sixth and our Haflinger horse Gus Gus. It is with great sadness to share with you the passing of our beloved horse, Gus Gus, on September 15th, 2023. Gus Gus so deeply touched the lives of so many and will live on in our hearts forever.
I look forward to meeting you and seeing you soon for future myofascial release sessions.

"On June 2, 2022, I went to have a session with Smith at Soulful Waters. The session was set for two hours, and this was my second interaction with MFR. The first session was very impactful, but the second session was life changing because of the emotional and physical releases experienced in the session. At first, he spent time on my upper hip, which was released through his techniques and then he entered into the psoas area. First, in his approach to the right side of the psoas and stomach area, there was a wave of three kicks that came across the psoas area almost immediately upon entering that area of the body. The kicks felt like a powerful baby kicking and were felt by both Smith and I (I am not pregnant, trust me, nor have I ever had a baby). The feeling was so powerful and there was a wave of resistance from the baby that was getting released during this process. My interpretation of this stems from either the thoughts and feelings that I, personally, had as a baby or the release of fear towards having a baby myself. It was a very hard feeling to describe in words; although, it was powerful and something that was truly an out of body experience because of the pulsation of kicks stemming from the area. It did not hurt, necessarily, but rather Smith mentioned that he was getting a sense of a female or woman-like man who was doing the kicking. On the left side of my body, there was a more quiet, subdued sensation, almost zen-like to where I was ebbing in between a state of flow between the conscious and unconscious. There were moments of imagery popping into my head and moments that felt as though I was in a state of Theta, or flow. Finally, Smith ended on a MFR technique focused on my L4 right side and held that position for a number of minutes. As he finished the process, there was a hot, tingling sensation that overcame both of our bodies throughout the exchange of energy fields. All of these sensations had a similar theme driven on the "release" and blissful or euphoric energy in each moment. There was imagery similar to a sun or bright light in all four areas of the body, which was an interesting feeling as well. Although unsure of what this means, it is very interesting to experience such a unique and open journey through the understanding of life. About 24 hours later, I feel very calm, connected, and exhausted from such a journey so will continue to stay open throughout this process to help open doors that have never been opened.
Thank you, Smith, for helping me navigate these waters. With both you and I being open towards the process, there are amazing things to come in better understanding life, liberty and the pursuit of purpose." - Estes C.

"Smith Young is an extremely gifted Myofascial Release Therapist that I would highly recommend to everyone. My son, who is a competitive cross country runner that was enduring quite an amount of foot pain from an old stress fracture, has consistently received incredible treatments from Smith Young. When we first came to see him, Smith pointed out many areas where my son's body was greatly out of postural alignment. He would explain the problems and detail how he would help gently bring his body back into optimal postural alignment through Myofascial Release. Through only a couple of sessions, my son's shoulders, hips, legs were in good postural alignment and his foot pain had been relieved. We were able to transition to more of a maintenance phase with more time between visits. Smith has a caring demeanor and an excellent command of his skills as a Myofascial Release Therapist. We are very greatful to him for all his help with our son and would recommend him to anyone." - J.M.
"Smith is a wonderful practitioner of MFR. I made an appointment with Smith, because I was experiencing pain that was affecting my ability to exercise fully. After just one session with him, my pain had gone, and I was able to exercise at a higher level. I have seen Smith several times since then. Smith is extremely professional, and he creates a very safe space for the work. He has wonderful energy, and he is passionate about his work and his clients. He has also treated my husband and daughter. I would highly recommend him." - Julia
